[FIC] prison sentence;

"curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"

harry gives him a look, puzzled, one hand opened in preparation to give his line. "wait, hold on... i feel like i've heard that somewhere before."

"what? noooo, you're imagining things. c'mon, you're holding up the show."

"no, no i'm certain i've heard that before. where was it..." he frowns, brows furrowing, staring off at a wall as he tries to puzzle it out. it keeps him from noticing the nervous way nate shifts in the silence. he opens his mouth to speak, interrupt, when realization dawns on harry's face and his look turns accusing. "firefly!"

"what, where?" nate's head whips around, stopping when harry shoves his shoulder.

"you stole that from firefly, you prat!"

nate grins, a purely mischievous expression. "you know what? i did. i admit it. but you won't live to tell about it!" a hand closes over harry's, the shadow on the wall engulf the figure with an obscene crunching noise on nate's end. harry laughs, flailing his arm weakly in response, and when nate's shadow monster pulls away to chew its ill-gotten meal there's nothing but a stump left on the wall. harry's other hand gasps in shock, recoils as nate's lets out a cheesy villainous laugh.

harry pitches his voice up a few notches as his surviving hand screams in grief: "you monster!"

"and you're next!" the monster chases the survivor across the wall, until a gunshot rings out and the beast falls dead. the survivor turns in surprise to see the savior stride up with confidence. nate's voice drops an octave when the gunman speaks.

"you're safe now, ma'am."

"oh, my hero." harry's hand swoons into nate's, who valiantly catches her.

"i couldn't stand by while a woman like you - "

there's shouting from a few cells down, and nate and harry lean out to see an annoyed inmate shouting at them from down the block. they lean away from the bars again, sharing a grin and laughing, going on with the show without concern.

there are worse ways to spend a prison sentence, harry reflects, even if nate does keep him from sleeping until they've run through a few dozen shows like this a day.
